Acid Reflux And Asthma

In a normal process of digestion, partially digested food is being forwarded by muscular movements from the stomach into the intestine. However, for some people, the stomach contents travel back into the esophagus and stomach. This condition is known as acid reflux.
Common symptoms of this disease include heartburn, difficulty swallowing, reflux, chest pains, dental erosion, hoarseness, asthma, dyspepsia, vomiting, and several others.
If not properly treated, acid reflux can last several months. However, drug treatment can play a vital role in the treatment process of a patient.
The drugs most commonly used are:
Antacids. These medicines are used to neutralize acids in the gastrointestinal tract and are mostly taken for the relief of mild symptoms such as occasional episodes of indigestion and heartburn. They also act to incite the mechanisms defense of the stomach by increasing mucus and bicarbonate. Most antacids can be bought over the counter even without prescription. In addition, these drugs are one of the first to be recommended by professionals to lessen the pain of heartburn or mild symptoms. The three basic ingredients of antacids are magnesium, calcium and aluminum.
Acid suppressants such as histamine blockers are also commonly used. Antihistamines prevent production of stomach acids by alienating the actions of histamine. Histamine is a chemical in the body which promotes the production and secretion of acid in the stomach. Antihistamines are available even without prescription and provide relief of symptoms in most patients who suffer from frequent acid reflux. Patients should expect between 30 and 90 minutes for these drugs take effect. But the effect also lasts six to 24 hours. In cases of severe symptoms, the patient may have to take two doses a day. In some research, antihistamines have demonstrated improvements in asthma symptoms in people who suffer from acid reflux and therefore asthma.
However, in a study dated 2001, it has been suggested that histamine blockers sometimes gives complete relief of symptoms of dyspepsia and heartburn.
Inhibitors of proton pump are also used as medicine. They act to cut the production of stomach acids to react with cells lining the stomach that produce acid and release into the stomach. However, research has revealed that the use of inhibitors proton pump raises some concerns. Side effects, though rare, include diarrhea, headache, itching and nausea. In addition, these drugs also should be ignored by pregnant women and nursing mothers.
Another drug frequently addressed is the use of agents that protect the wall mucus in the gastrointestinal tract. This type of drug works by binding to an ulcer crater so that will be monitored for damage by digestive acids. It is recommended for people who are on maintenance therapy with the conditions of mild or moderate reflux of acid. Similarly, have fewer side effects, including constipation.
Spasm drugs are also used to prevent acid and even non-acid reflux. An agonist of gamma-amino butyric acid, a drug against the spasm is usually used to reduce muscle spasms. Unlike most medicines used for acid reflux, can also reduce acid reflux and amplify the pressure in the lower esophageal sphincter, a muscle that separates the esophagus from the stomach and prevents backup stomach contents.
